If I understand the specification aright, there is the dialogue of six plays to cover. Tricky, but hardly vast. Doubtless you will have asked your pupils to read at least some of the plays in English over the summer.

I should be very grateful for any input from teachers on how they plan to tackle teaching/helping children get to grips with the vast area proposed for next year’s paper.

Ha ha. Yep it’s for my headmistress so maybe without the phallus….. feliciter is a good idea – thank you

The simple word ‘feliciter’ may suit. It occurs in texts and also in graffiti, accompanied by a good-luck phallus (but I believe the latter is optional).

I am trying to come up with a message in Latin to wish someone well for the future. This sounds easy but it is for an engraving on a pen and so I only have 16 characters! I was thinking of something like ‘with much love’ or ‘best wishes for the future’ or ‘joy forever’ [...]

Hi, we’re thinking of teaching AS ”Classics” in 2011 using the OCR suite, partner teacher has up to GCSE level knowledge and is self taught, I have half a degree in it – we think it can be done but does anyone have advice? I know generally AS teaching is not advised without specialists, but if necessary I’ll take the bulk of the language units (partner teacher thinks students will go for the cachet of ”Classics” rather than ”Class Civ” and therefore will need a language unit – to be honest, the type of students we have, I think he’s right!) and he can teach Roman Society. Just to make things harder, we’d have students with very little if any prior knowledge. Again I know it can be done but any pointers for resources/planning/structure/advertising would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

      Dear Kim

It can be done especially if the students are keen. The Essential GCSE book by John Taylor is still very good for grammar at AS as is his book ’Latin Beyond GCSE’ – very useful prose translation exercises. It’s worth using Ashley Carter’s ’A level Unseens’ too. These plus learning the vocabulary lists supplied by the exam board would cover almost everything. Don’t worry about being a specialist – at AS it’s still OK and will improve your own learning. I’d start with Ashley Carter’s text book with revision/vision of grammar and learning vocab. Do you have to do it in 1 year?

      I hope that helps.

      Penny

I am hoping to teach AS latin to one student , off timetable and over two years. Does anyone know if he can do the lit. this year and language in 2012? Can’t find regulations on website, but would be grateful for any advice.

Hi, the JACT Latin Committee are discussing ideas for possible sessions at the next Conference. Are there any topics/papers/texts that you would particularly welcome a session on?
