They need to be 16+, and yep, it’s assumed teachers (or at least one, who is there to supervise) will be digging.

What would you like to know? The first thing perhaps to say is that my school paid for staff places and expenses, which made things easier to arrange and cheaper for the students. Most students made their own arrangements to get to Haltwhistle (nearest town) and I drove a few up and back (as well as collected and dropped off those who came by train at the train station). It’s all relatively cheap: £20 required fee to become a ’Friend of Vindolanda’, plus £50 fee to excavate, plus accommodation at YH was about £14 pppn plus a £10 school’s membership fee. There are two digs at the site, one running Sunday-Thurs, and the other Tues-Sat, which means that visitors on any day can always see archaeologists at work. We did the former, which has more people working on it (20). Places are available on 1st November, and most go within days. The digging day is 10-5, with a lunch and tea break. What else?

SQA (the Scottish Qualifications Authority ) is considering the future of classical subjects as part of its provision. Foundation Level qualifications may go, and many colleagues are worried that students will not take up Latin at a higher level. While both OCR and WJEC are introducing new qualifications for entry-level Latin study, why is SQA considering the opposite? Join in discussion/make a [...] -

Just got back from a week’s digging at Vindolanda on Hadrian’s Wall. I took 8 students, digging 10-5 each day for five days, staying at the Youth Hostel (a half-hour walk from the site). Brilliant experience, which I really recommend as something different for a small, dedicated group. Second time I’ve done this trip. Would [...]

Is the following useful….
http://etext.virginia.edu/latin/ovid/trans/Ovhome.htm
It’s Tony Kline’s easy-to-access translation, and all key characters are hyperlinked and cross-reference in a mythological index. Click on Apollo and see all the places in the poem where he appears. The translation might help with understanding, though it’s not in fact a summary. In reply to - Ben Hayes posted an update in the group GCSE OCR Classical Civilisation : Hi everyone. Now that there are three books to cover in the Ovid option for the epic module, we are finding that pupils are getting increasingly confused about who’s who – Actaeon, Acoetes, Achelous, Athene, Artemis, Apollo! I can see why they might be struggling! [...] · View -

All students are 16+ – I think they have to be for insurance purposes. Early booking vital – the places become available at the beginning of November and disappear with amazing speed. We’re all staying at the Once Brewed YH, which is cheap and comfortable (half hour walk from the site, and next to the [...]
