Hi Catherine,
I'm imagining we will assess "strands" (if that is the right term!) rather than whole levels at any one time: so for example we might do some source-based work relevant to levels 4-6 and then look at whereabouts pupils fall just with regard to the use of sources. Hopefully over the course of a few activities both staff and pupils will get a stong feel for what level they're working towards overall, and how to reach it! All very early days at the minute, so a little trial and error needed!

Hi Ben and Katherine, thanks for your kind assistance. Katherine I would love to see what you have done and Ben I think what you have managed to produce is brilliant. My HOD and I will certainly use them as a base for our own. I assume its a best fit model and that you are not setting every task with a view to them being able to do all of the things that make a level.

This sounds a great idea, Cressida - I hope it all went well. We are in Northumberland for the summer, so I am thinking Roman for the time being!

Hi Catherine,
I have recently been working on this very same issue as we are required to provide "National Curriculum" levels on all KS3 reports. I tried explaining that they don't exist, but this was deemed irrelevant, so I've had to make some up. I've just uploaded them to the library, so hopefully Steve will put them in the resources area in due course. Numerous caveats apply, but they should at least provide some food for thought. Please do let me know what you think!

Dear Catherine
We have developed our own Class Civ assessment levels using an amalgam of Latin, History and English. Let me know if you would like a copy.

That would be fantastic Sarah! They are beginnners and the real aim is to lay the basic groundwork which can then be developed for GCSE; so basic grammar and maybe 100 words. They are mixed ability with some SEN and some G&T. My understanding is that they don't have the greatest attention spans.

All students are 16+ - I think they have to be for insurance purposes. Early booking vital - the places become available at the beginning of November and disappear with amazing speed. We're all staying at the Once Brewed YH, which is cheap and comfortable (half hour walk from the site, and next to the great Twice Brewed Inn). I'm driving some up and the older students are taking the train via Carlisle to Haltwhistle (10 min max drive away), where I'll collect them. If you had a school minibus that'd be excellent,as you could drive up to Crag Lough/Housesteads/Army Museum/cinema in Hexham(!) while you're there. Also, it'd save the half hour walk for everyone. Costs kept down as the school is paying my expenses, rather than the students, as there are so few of them (8). I did the same thing two years ago, so I can talk more about details. Email me!

Hi All
Have been reading the thread with interest - was mooting the idea of taking students on a dig last year, but the planning involved really put me off, and the potential cost...however I have a new partner teacher this year who's very keen and is inspiring me to look again! I'd be really interested to hear how the costs etc break down, and how you get on at Vindolanda Steve etc - are your students under 16 (did you have to get more supervision? early booking etc...) Coming from about 100 miles north of london but not really near any convenient train station except for going down to London!
